How to register a trademark in Peru (Indecopi), step by step
What you need, how long it takes and which mistakes to avoid when protecting your business name and logo in Peru.

Designing a strong brand is an investment. Registering it is what protects it: a trademark registration with Indecopi, Peru's IP office, gives you the exclusive right to use that name and logo in Peru for the goods or services you choose.
1. Decide what to register
You can register a word mark (name only), a figurative mark (logo only) or a combined mark (name and logo). Most businesses start with a combined or word mark.
2. Choose the right class
Trademarks are filed by class under the Nice Classification: 45 classes, 34 for goods and 11 for services. Restaurants usually file in class 43, packaged food in classes 29 or 30, agencies in 35 or 42. Each class is paid separately.
3. Run a prior search
Before filing, make sure no identical or similar mark exists in the same class. This avoids objections and losing the filing fee.
4. File the application
Applications are filed online. You will need the owner's details, the name and logo, the list of goods or services and the fee per class (check the current amount at indecopi.gob.pe).
5. Publication and opposition
Once published in Indecopi's electronic gazette, third parties have a set period to oppose. If there is no opposition, Indecopi examines the application and issues a decision.
6. How long does it last?
A registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely for equal periods.
